Cinder Track accessible cycling scheme

Gallows Close Community Centre , Scarborough and Ryedale Community Cycling & Yorkshire Coast Sight Support

Wild Eye has launched a new accessible cycling pilot along Scarborough’s Cinder Track in partnership with local organisations. The scheme offers free bike hire to help more people experience the area’s stunning wildlife and explore the newly installed ‘Old Friends’ sculpture trail, which runs from Scarborough to the Scalby Beck viaduct.

The project is designed to improve access to nature, promote wellbeing, and encourage sustainable travel along this popular coastal route.

Bikes are available to borrow for free from Gallows Close Community Centre and Yorkshire Coast Sight Support, thanks to support from Scarborough and Ryedale Community Cycling CIC. A variety of adult and child bikes are on offer, including adapted cycles for those with additional access needs, along with safety helmets and basic maintenance support.

The Cinder Track serves as a vital green corridor between Scarborough and Whitby, home to badgers, deer, owls, swifts, and even rare wild orchids. The addition of the ‘Old Friends‘ sculpture trail by artist Emma Smith, developed with local communities, scientists, and naturalists, brings a new layer of sensory and artistic experience to the journey.

How to Borrow a Bike

Adapted Bikes (for additional access needs): Available for free via Yorkshire Coast Sight Support in partnership with Beyond Housing. Booking is essential. Contact them via their website.

Standard Bikes: Available for free hire Tuesday to Saturday from Gallows Close Community Centre.

Scarborough & Ryedale Community Cycling c.i.c. was formed by Rob Brown and Pete Blood in 2014 and registered 16/03/2015. Our objective has always been to provide cycling opportunities for all, including those with disabilities, the elderly, those who suffer from dementia or isolation and indeed anyone who wishes to gain the health benefits and sense of wellbeing, which cycling can provide.

Yorkshire Coast Sight Support (YCSS) is a dedicated local charity supporting people living with sight impairment across the region. With a focus on promoting independence, self-esteem, and community inclusion, YCSS offers a range of vital services—from expert advice on aids and equipment to emotional support, social groups, and even a strategically designed gym space. The organisation also provides help with form filling and signposts to other essential services, helping to reduce isolation and make life with sight loss more manageable.
